Recommended literature

The lecture notes available (here form the basic source.

The literature recommended in SIS is the following:
[1] Rudin, W.: Functional analysis. Second edition, McGraw-Hill, Inc., New York, 1991
[2] Meise R. and Vogt D. : Introduction to functional analysis, Oxford University Press, New York, 1997

More precisely:

The first two topics - Banach algebras and C*-algebras - are more or less covered by Chapters 10 and 11 of [1]. The third and the fourth topics - unbounded operators and spectral decompositions - are inspired mainly by Chapters 12 and 13 of [1] and by Chapters 18-21 of [2]. The correspondence is not exact, moreover, the approaches in the two books differ in several points.
